Flora and Fauna Assessment undertaken by an Ecologist

Flora & Fauna Assessment Report (FFA)

A Flora and Fauna Assessment (FFA) (sometimes also called an Ecological Impact Assessment (EIA)) is a specialist ecological report required by local councils as part of the Development Application (DA) process. It evaluates the ecological values of a site — including native vegetation, threatened species, and habitat features — and assesses the potential impacts of a proposed development.

When Do You Need a Flora & Fauna Assessment?

Most councils across NSW require an FFA when a development proposal involves clearing native vegetation, is located near environmentally sensitive land, or is likely to affect threatened species or ecological communities. This includes residential subdivisions, commercial developments, infrastructure projects, and rural land use changes.

If your DA has been returned with a request for an ecological assessment, or your planner has flagged potential biodiversity constraints, an FFA is likely what you need.

What's Included in Our Reports

Our Flora and Fauna Assessment Reports are thorough, council-ready documents that include a detailed desktop review of relevant databases including the BioNet Atlas and NSW Vegetation Information System, comprehensive on-site field surveys to identify native plant species, fauna habitat, and ecological communities, assessment against relevant legislation including the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and the Commonwealth EPBC Act, identification of any threatened species, populations, or ecological communities, a clear impact assessment with practical recommendations to avoid, minimise, or offset ecological impacts, and high-quality mapping of vegetation communities and habitat features.

Our Approach

We deliver practical, defensible reports that give you a clear pathway to approval. Our assessments are designed to meet council requirements the first time, reducing delays and costly re-submissions. With over 10 years of experience working across Sydney, the Central Coast, Hunter, and Illawarra regions, we understand the specific requirements of local councils and the ecological characteristics of each area.

Whether you're a property owner, developer, planner, or builder, we'll guide you through the process from initial enquiry to DA lodgement.
