Mine Rehabilitation Plans
Mine rehabilitation is a critical component of responsible mining operations in NSW. Ecological rehabilitation plans set out the strategy for restoring biodiversity values to mine-affected land — from initial landform design through to the establishment of self-sustaining native vegetation communities and fauna habitat.
When Is a Mine Rehabilitation Plan Needed?
Ecological rehabilitation plans are typically required as a condition of mining leases and development consents, as part of Mine Closure Plans and Mine Operations Plans, to meet requirements under the NSW Mining Act 1992 and Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, for progressive rehabilitation during active mining operations, and for final rehabilitation and relinquishment of mining titles.
Regulators including the NSW Resources Regulator and Department of Planning increasingly require detailed, measurable rehabilitation plans with clear ecological outcomes.
What We Provide
Our mine rehabilitation plans are grounded in ecological science and designed to deliver measurable outcomes. We provide baseline ecological assessments of pre-mining and reference site conditions, rehabilitation strategies tailored to target vegetation communities and PCTs, species selection and seed sourcing recommendations using local provenance native species, fauna habitat restoration including nest boxes, woody debris placement, and connectivity planning, performance criteria and completion targets aligned with regulatory requirements, and monitoring programs with adaptive management frameworks.
Practical Rehabilitation That Delivers Results
We work with mining companies across NSW to develop rehabilitation plans that are both scientifically robust and practically achievable. Our approach focuses on setting realistic targets informed by local reference sites, designing rehabilitation that integrates with surrounding landscapes, and building in adaptive management so strategies can be refined based on monitoring data. With experience across open-cut and underground mining operations in the Hunter Valley, Central Coast, and western NSW, we understand the unique challenges of restoring biodiversity on mine-affected land.
