Targeted Threatened Species Surveys

Targeted threatened species surveys are specialist field investigations designed to determine the presence or absence of specific threatened flora or fauna species on a site. These surveys follow established scientific methodologies and are often required to support ecological assessments, development applications, or management plans.

When Are Targeted Surveys Needed?

Targeted surveys are typically required when a desktop assessment or preliminary site visit identifies potential habitat for a threatened species and further data is needed to confirm whether the species is present. They may be required as part of a Flora & Fauna Assessment, BDAR, or Review of Environmental Factors, as a condition of development consent, to support a Biodiversity Stewardship Agreement, or for environmental monitoring or compliance reporting.

Species We Survey For

Our team has extensive experience surveying for a wide range of threatened species across NSW, including threatened flora of all kinds, arboreal mammals including koalas, gliders, and possums, microbats using ultrasonic call recording and analysis (Anabat), large forest owls using call playback methodology, woodland and wetland birds, reptiles and amphibians including the Green and Golden Bell Frog, and threatened ecological communities and their specific indicator species and landscapes.

Survey Standards and Timing

All our surveys are conducted in accordance with current NSW Government guidelines and the Biodiversity Assessment Method (BAM). Many threatened species can only be reliably surveyed during specific seasons or conditions — for example, many flora species require spring surveys when they are flowering, and fauna surveys often need to be conducted during warmer months when animals are most active.

We'll advise you on the optimal survey timing for your project and species of interest, and we plan survey programs to align with your project timeline wherever possible.

Related Services & Locations

Targeted Threatened Species Surveys are often required as part of a BDAR or Flora & Fauna Assessment. Results may feed into a Biodiversity Management Plan or Vegetation Management Plan.

We conduct targeted surveys across NSW including Sydney, Western Sydney, the Hunter & Central Coast, Illawarra & South Coast, Blue Mountains, Central West NSW, and the Mid-North Coast.
