PCT & Vegetation Mapping

Plant Community Type (PCT) identification and vegetation mapping are foundational components of ecological assessment in NSW. Accurate identification of PCTs is essential for Biodiversity Development Assessment Reports (BDARs), land management planning, and understanding the conservation significance of vegetation on a site.

What Is PCT Classification?

The PCT classification system is the standard framework used in NSW to describe and categorise native vegetation communities. Each PCT is defined by its characteristic plant species composition, structure, and landscape position. PCTs are used in the Biodiversity Assessment Method (BAM) to calculate biodiversity credits, determine the presence of Threatened Ecological Communities (TECs), and assess vegetation integrity.

Getting the PCT identification right is critical — it directly affects credit calculations, offset obligations, and the overall outcome of your ecological assessment.

Our Vegetation Mapping Services

We provide detailed vegetation mapping and PCT classification for projects of all scales. Our services include on-ground floristic surveys using BAM-standard plot methodology, PCT identification using the BioNet Vegetation Classification database, mapping of native vegetation extent, condition, and boundaries, identification of Threatened Ecological Communities and their condition thresholds, vegetation integrity scoring for BAM assessments, and high-quality GIS mapping products suitable for inclusion in ecological reports and development applications.

Experience Across NSW Landscapes

Our ecologists have extensive experience identifying PCTs across a wide range of landscapes — from coastal lowland forests and wetlands, through dry sclerophyll woodlands of the Hunter and Central Coast, to the grassy woodlands and riparian communities of western Sydney and the Illawarra. We stay current with updates to the PCT classification system and maintain strong working knowledge of the vegetation communities in our key operating regions.

Related Services & Locations

PCT and Vegetation Mapping supports BDARs, Flora & Fauna Assessments, and Vegetation Management Plans. It is also essential for Mine Rehabilitation Plans and Reviews of Environmental Factors.

We provide vegetation mapping across NSW including Sydney, Western Sydney, the Hunter & Central Coast, Illawarra & South Coast, Blue Mountains, Central West NSW, and the Mid-North Coast.
